O procedimento explicativo faz parte do processo de reconstrução do passado. Embora tenha sofrido um processo de relativização nas últimas décadas, defendo que o procedimento explicativo deve ser ressaltado, tendo como base, preliminarmente, o reconhecimento da relação entre os conceitos de referente e representação os quais reintroduziram o tema da historicidade na teoria da história. Minha hipótese de trabalho sustenta que os fundamentos reconstrutivos dos historiadores, quando fatorizados, enfatizam a noção de intencionalidade como princípio estruturante da explicação histórica. Além disso, incorpora elementos causais e teleológicos em seu procedimento explicativo. Ademais, a historiografia apresenta um caráter multidescritivo, não se opondo à espinha dorsal das reflexões tropológicas. Assim, o exame da lógica interna das explicações históricas refuta as teses relativistas, geralmente expressas nas argumentações pseudo-históricas que confundem explicações diferentes com explicações divergentes.
