Se analizaron histológicamente 376 organismos de Pteria sterna obtenidos de una balsa experimental localizada en la Bahía de los Ángeles, Baja California, México. Se realizaron siete muestreos bimensuales desde agosto de 1987 hasta agosto de 1988, que cubrieron organismos de dos a catorce meses de edad. Se propone un ciclo gonádico con siete etapas de madurez y una escala histológica de madurez sexual con nueve estadios conspicuos. La edad de la primera madurez ocurrió en las hembras en octubre y posteriormente en los machos en diciembre. Con base en las observaciones, se concluye que la población de P. sterna, fijada a la balsa experimental en agosto de 1987, desovó continuamente, con picas en diciembre, febrero y agosto.
