This essay seeks to provide elements to understand the transition from indirect election and limited voting rights given to citizens who met certain characteristics to direct election and a universal vote. Finally, this article attempts to contribute to the reflections about the evolution of these rights. It is through a historical-electoral approach that one has the opportunity to assess the national advancement related of suffrage, which has allowed the stability and respect of popular sovereignty, based on a universal, free and secret vote from the citizens and their inalienable right to be elected for office.

This essay seeks to provide elements to understand the transition from indirect election and limited voting rights given to citizens who met certain characteristics to direct election and a universal vote. It is through a historical-electoral approach that one has the opportunity to assess the national advancement related of suffrage, which has allowed the stability and respect of popular sovereignty, based on a universal, free and secret vote from the citizens and their inalienable right to be elected for office.
