| Summary: | It was analyzed news stories about deaths from COVID-19 during the two Epidemiological Weeks with the highest mortality rates from the disease in 2020 and 2021. The theoretical-methodological contribution was based on the four main journalistic purposes, with the support of the Public Health field in the understanding that COVID-19, in addition to being a pandemic, was configured as a syndemic amidst the (dis)infodemic, far beyond a biomedical problem. The syndemic broadens the concept of pandemic, is aggravated by socio-economic and environmental issues and affects health in disparate ways. Of the 42 articles analyzed, the purpose of mere information predominated (N=40). One news story was intended to monitor power and strengthen democracy. The conclusions indicated that journalistic purposes require critical and interdisciplinary reflection in the face of crises such as COVID-19 and the new prevailing mediatized technosocial reality. |
