Sumario:[EN] Access to safe water and basic sanitation is vital for human development. Developing countries are still waiting to have appropriate water treatment technologies in order to improve their living conditions and as a consequence lead out of poverty thresholds. This research is focused on the implementation of appropriate technologies for obtaining safe drinking water easily, so users can perform its management themselves. Considering that the active participation of the population and their empowerment are fundamental to the success of this project, it is also necessary to consider technical, socio-economic and cultural needs of the beneficiary population. After evaluating different alternatives for drinking water treatment, the triple barrier treatment applied is selected, based on "disinfection" of the aquifer using membrane technology followed by chlorination and ultraviolet radiation steps. With this treatment, living conditions of the population will be improved in a high percentage. As a consequence, it is expected that water-borne diseases will decrease by at least 40% immediately and the results of the project will serve as a reference to replicate the treatment in rural populations with similar characteristics in Ecuador, with poverty rates range from 60% to 80%. The research developed in this Master Science Thesis will contribute to the achievement of Goal 3 of the “National Plan for Good Living from Ecuador”, which states: "for 2017 all the people of Ecuador have water supply in sufficient quality and quantity to meet their basic needs". In the research, technologies implemented are based on those developed by AQUAPOT Project, considering technical and social aspects involved in a proper design of drinking water treatment, which will provide water supply for the current and future population up to 500 inhabitants of Cangonamá (Ecuador).
